Ibtikar for Empowerment and Social Entrepreneurship has successfully concluded the implementation of the SHELEADS II project, marking the end of a transformative journey dedicated to supporting refugee women in the Bethlehem Governorate. Carried out in partnership with the “Strengthening the Influence of Palestinian Refugees on their Living Conditions” programme (PART II), implemented by GIZ, the project offered a comprehensive model for social, economic, and psychological empowerment.
Over the course of the project, more than 1,121 refugee women participated in targeted skill-building workshops. These sessions focused on practical areas such as food processing, accessories crafting, home gardening, and self-care product making. In parallel, 94 women received psychosocial support and vocational therapy, helping them regain confidence and build resilience in the face of everyday challenges.
One of the project’s key milestones was the successful launch of over 30 women-led micro and small enterprises, providing participants with sustainable income opportunities and a renewed sense of independence. In addition, Ibtikar organized five vibrant open-air markets, which brought together over 250 women-led businesses from both refugee camps and surrounding areas. These events created opportunities for marketing, networking, and meaningful community exchange.
Beyond the economic impact, SHELEADS II placed strong emphasis on social integration. The open-air markets and joint community activities encouraged interaction between refugee and non-refugee women, helping to break down social and cultural barriers while fostering a spirit of trust and cooperation.
The project also engaged youth through creative initiatives in photography, marketing, and business development. These efforts not only supported women entrepreneurs but also helped young people develop essential life and professional skills while becoming active participants in their communities.
SHELEADS II was more than a project, it was a shared journey of recovery, growth, and transformation. By offering practical tools, emotional support, and inclusive spaces, Ibtikar has once again demonstrated that investing in women is investing in the future of a stronger, more resilient society.
